Speakers

Abel, Rob

Chief Executive Officer - IMS Global Learning Consortium

Rob Abel Ed.D. became the Chief Executive Officer of IMS Global Learning Consortium in February 2006. IMS has achieved dramatic growth providing world leadership in interoperability standards, adoption of next generation learning technologies, and the impact of technology on access, affordability, and quality of K-20 education.

Previously Rob was the Senior Vice President of Client Services of Collegis (now SunGard Higher Education) where he was responsible for services delivered to more than 60 higher education institutions.

Rob also served as General Manager of Collegis' Online and Academic Services business unit, Chief Marketing Officer, and Senior Vice President of Business Development. Prior to Collegis Rob led development of the Oracle Learning Architecture (OLA).

Rob has over 30 years experience spanning advanced technology and education. He has degrees in Educational Leadership & Change, Management, Computer Engineering, and Computational Physics from Fielding Graduate Institute, Stanford, USC, and Carnegie Mellon respectively.


Alexander, Shirley Prof

Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Teaching, Learning & Equity) - University of Technology (UTS)

Shirley Alexander is Professor of Learning Technologies at the University of Technology, Sydney where she is Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Teaching, Learning & Equity). Her portfolio responsibilities include the quality of courses and teaching, equity and diversity, and the student experience.

She has previously held the positions of Director of the Institute for Interactive Media and Learning and Dean of the Faculty of Education at UTS. Prior to joining UTS she worked in NSW TAFE, initially as a teacher of Computing, and then as Industry Specialist for Computer Based Learning.

Shirley's long term research agenda has been on the effective use of information and communication technologies in learning in both the tertiary and schools sectors. She has delivered keynote and invited addresses to a number of international and national conferences on this research. She has also managed the production of a number of award-winning e-learning projects. She was a member of two successive national government committees on teaching and learning in higher education from 1997 to 2004.

She is the Chair of the TAFE NSW Higher Education Academic Board and sits on the Board of Trustees of the Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences (the Powerhouse Museum), The Sydney Institute of TAFE Advisory Council, the TAFE NSW Higher Education Governing Council, the Academic Board of the Australian Catholic University and New South Wales National Partnerships Evaluation Committee. She is also the Chair of the Digital Education Advisory Group to the Australian Government.


Anlezark, Alison

Manager, Data Collections and Analysis - National Centre for Vocational Education and Research (NCVER)

Alison Anlezark is Manager, Data Collections and Analysis at the National Centre for Vocational Education and Research (NCVER). Prior to taking on this role she managed the Policy Support Unit at NCVER, and was responsible for establishing the Longitudinal Surveys of Australian Youth (LSAY) branch at NCVER. She has a strong academic background in research, and is currently studying a Masters in Public Policy at Flinders University (SA).


Bartlett, David

Director - Explor Consulting Pty Ltd

David was the Premier of the Australian state of Tasmania from 2008 until 2011. During his parliamentary career he also held the positions of Minister for Innovation, Science & Technology, Minister for Education & Skills, Minister for Planning & Workplace Relations, Attorney General and Member for Denison.

Prior to entering Parliament David had an extensive career in the information technology and telecommunications sector. As Premier he switched on the first non-Telstra owned optic fibre backbone in Tasmania and he championed his home state as the first National Broadband Network location. Throughout his political career David advocated strong economic growth through innovation, public education, food production, broadband, and renewable energy.

David brings a unique perspective to discussions about the successes and challenges of public life, and is passionate about sharing the Tasmanian experience with other regional economies.

David is currently Director of Explor Consulting, Chairman of a dynamic IT startup Asdeq Labs, a Senior Policy Advisor (Science & Innovation) at the University of Tasmania, father of Hudson and Matilda - and post politics takes weekends off.


Browne, Delia

National Copyright Director, National Copyright Unit - Ministerial Council for Education, Early Childhood Development and Youth Affairs (MCEECDYA)
President and Co Founder - P2PU

Delia Browne is a Sydney based policy lawyer specialising in Copyright issues in education. She is the National Copyright Director for Schools and TAFEs, Ministerial Council on Education, Early Childhood Development and Youth Affairs(MCEEDYA) and heads up the National Copyright Unit (NCU).

The NCU provides copyright advice to the School and TAFE sector. See www.smartcopying.edu.au for information sheets and online educational resources on copyright. The NCU also advocates for copyright law reform on behalf of the School and TAFE sector.

She is a co founder and President of Peer 2 Peer University (P2PU) a free online disruptive education initiative, the deputy chair of the Australian Centre of Photography and an iCommons Board Director. She is a passionate advocate of Creative Commons and Open Education and was one the drafters of the Cape Town Declaration on Open Education. She is on the editorial boards of the Media and Arts Law Review and the NZ Intellectual Property Review and is a sought after conference speaker.

 

Campbell, Bronwen

Training & E-learning Consultant - Active Learning Partners

The world first Dive Supervisor Training Simulator won the platinum award in the IMS Global Consortium Learning Impact Awards in the New and Research category at Long Beach California in May 2011. Bronwen's broad experience contributed to this success as she was part of the team who designed, built, configured and trialled the simulator, and presented it at the Learning Impact Awards, together with Rob Gatt from the Australian Diver Accreditation Scheme.

She has been a project engineer, manufacturing manager, industrial equipment sales engineer, sales manager, human resources manager, occupational health and safety consultant, writer, trainer and course developer.

Qualified in technical, management, training and language fields, Bronwen holds a bachelor's degree in Chemical and Materials Engineering (University of Auckland), Certificate of Proficiency in German (Stage I and II) (University of Auckland) a Master of Business Administration (Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology), an Advanced Diploma of Occupational Diving (Dive Project Management) and a Diploma of Workplace Training and Assessment Systems (Australian School of Commerce and Management), and is currently undertaking a Vocational Graduate Certificate in Hyperbaric Operations (Leadership).


Casey, Sean M.

Advisor, Broadband Applications - NBN Co

Sean Casey has a newly appointed position as the broadband applications advisor for NBN Co. Sean facilitates application development and new use models for high speed broadband networks with a focus on delivering value through public sector benefits: health, education, energy, government, regional development and local communities.

Sean has been in the technology industry for 18 years, the majority in Australia supporting local businesses and government.


Cook, Tony

Associate Secretary, Schools and Youth - Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR)

Tony joined the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations as Associate Secretary, Schools and Youth in October 2011. Prior to this he was Deputy Secretary, Government and Corporate with the Victorian Department of Premier and Cabinet.

Tony has held a number of senior executive education positions including those of Deputy Secretary, Office for Children and Portfolio Coordination, Deputy Secretary, Office for Planning, Strategy and Coordination and General Manager, Student Learning within the Victorian Department of Education and Early Childhood Development. Tony began his education career with Education Queensland.

Tony is a registered primary school teacher with a major in early childhood education. He has been a deputy principal and taught in schools and preschools in Queensland and the United Kingdom.


Croger, Peter

Principal - Croger Associates Pty Ltd

Peter Croger is the principal of Croger Associates, a consulting firm that specialises in policies, strategies and management for ICT in education and government. His clients include many government and education organisations throughout Australia and internationally. Peter's previous roles have included being a government executive, a CIO and an ICT practitioner.

Peter's recent work for a number of governments has been about strengthening collaboration amongst different organisations on ICT and interoperability.


Curtis, Greg

Manager, Business Technologies – Department of Education Tasmania (DET TAS)

Greg is the Manager of Business Technologies at the Department Of Education in Tasmania. Greg is an IT technologist and recent responsibilities have included implementing a new student management system and the ongoing transformation of business processes to keep pace with the changing educational and economic climate.

Greg has been a long term proponent of Identity and Access Management as an underpinning framework to provide day one provisioning of all students and staff. This links to service based architectures and standard data vocabularies which are in use and have planned extensions in Tasmania. Greg has been involved in the standards movements in Australia including IMS, Standards Australia and more lately SIF AU.

Greg is also a consultant to a Tasmanian project that will introduce a common identity and access management approach across government.

 

Dane, Jo

Senior Consultant, Education Consulting – Woods Bagot

Jo Dane is an educator, designer and student, dedicated to the pursuit of designing learning environments to improve the student learning experience. Having spent almost ten years at Monash University teaching Interior Architecture, Jo is now working as an education consultant with Woods Bagot.

She is in the final stages of completing a PhD titled New Generation Learning Environments in Higher Education, in which Jo has developed a unique form of education post occupancy evaluation. The evaluation process derives from a firm belief that human behaviour is affected by the physical environment, and in the context of education, that the design of learning environments influences teaching and learning behaviour. In this sense, Jo’s work is shaped by an understanding of student-centred teaching and learning practice and a desire to design engaging places for learning in the 21st Century.

Doyle, Bevan

Chief Information Officer, Information and Communication Technologies – Department of Education & Training Western Australia (DoE WA)

Bevan Doyle is the Chief Information Officer at the Department of Education

In this role, Bevan is responsible for managing the strategic development and implementation of Information and Communications Technologies (ICT) across the Department.

He has established a vision and direction that will meet the existing and emerging strategic business needs, while simultaneously ensuring that existing operations are not compromised. A current focus is the development and deployment of online teaching and learning systems to support teaching and learning in the Kindergarten to Year 12 programs in Government schools. In this, Bevan works with key business areas to deliver world leading solutions .

Bevan has led a number of internationally acclaimed initiatives that places the Western Australian government education system at the leading edge of integrating and managing technologies in the delivery of education programs for students in the 4 – 17 year old range.

Errey, Howard

Howard is a psychologist and elearning consultant who works where technology and people connect. He often has a quirky and unusual view of innovation and where it is headed applying stories, mythology and archetypes to organisational complexity. He is a consultant at Eworks. Farmer, Matt

General Manager, Information Strategy & Management - Department of Education & Early Childhood Development (DEECD)

Matt Farmer has been with DEECD Victoria since May 2010 as General Manager, Information Strategy & Management Division. He has worked in IT for over 20 years in diverse fields including process engineering, chemometrics, supply-chain and logistics, and global trade. He believes information can both transform and empower, and is enjoying the challenge and opportunity of making that happen within the education sector. Outside of work he enjoys surfing and playing the guitar, but does find it makes the strings go rusty.

 

Farrell, Pauline

Executive Manager, Blended eLearning Solutions - Box Hill Institute

Pauline Farrell is the Executive Manager of Blended eLearning Solutions (BeLS) at Box Hill Institute. Pauline project managed both the GPS Learning Pathways and Student Web project which has created significant change within the organisation. Pauline has won numerous awards and fellowships including the TRIP Fellowship, PhD scholarship, SARC leadership award (2008) and Innovations Award (2008 and 2009). BeLS has won team of the year two years in a row, shortlisted five times over three years in the eLearning Industry Excellence Awards and won of these awards.

Pauline has worked as a teacher, lecturer, general manager, consultant and executive manager in numerous organisations and is passionate about learner engagement, individualised learning pathways and letting pedagogy lead technological innovations.


Fruth, Dr. Larry

Chief Executive Officer - Schools Interoperability Framework (SIF) Association

Larry Fruth is currently the Executive Director of the Schools Interoperability Framework Association (SIF Association).

The SIF Association is an independent non-profit membership organisation comprised of over 2,200 international educational institutions, government agencies and software vendors whose community mission is the development of a global platform independent, vendor-neutral XML Specification to enable data sharing among software applications in education internationally.

The Association has three established communities (US, UK and AU) who are leveraging each other's work and sharing best practices to address the needs of the educational data marketplace.

Larry comes from a long line of educators with over 25 years of experience in teaching and learning as a classroom teacher/professor, curriculum and professional development designer and state and federal policymaker.

Most recently Larry served as an Associate Director for the Ohio Department of Education where his oversight role included institutional strategic planning and alignment, development of Academic Content Standards in Technology, State Educational Technology Director designee, the development of eSchool Operating Standards, lead for various federal programs as well as pointing various pK-16 partnership initiatives.


Hill, Trevor

Director IT Services - Department of Education Tasmania (DET TAS)

Trevor has been the Director IT Services in the Department of Education for the past 6 years, where he is responsible for strategy, policy, programs, services and infrastructure for schools, libraries, adult education and other community services.

Previous to this, Trevor was Manager IT Services for TAFE Tasmania for 5 years, undertaking similar functions in the VET sector organisation. Trevor is on several Tasmanian Government ICT committees as well as AICTEC, Education K-12 CIO group and various SIFau groups such as SIFAAMB, NSIP and is Chair of DSWG.


Ingvarson, Dan

Progam Lead, Projects and Architecture – National Schools Interoperability Program (NSIP)

Daniel grew up in a family where education was the central theme with his grandparents, parents and extended family working as either teachers, School Principals or in Tertiary Education Departments. Daniel started working in IT and education in 1987 and built the first Education Internet Service Provider in Australia in 1993. He designed and built the first school specific Internet gateway in 1995, and in 1998 the first Internet portal to link logins with Internet based learning activities in a centralised infrastructure. This development changed the way Internet was managed in Australia. Daniel's software was used by over 50% of Australian students and was built on Open Source - before it was fashionable.

In 2000, Daniel went on to conceive, design, and develop an e-learning platform that included a Personal Portal, Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), Learning Content Management System, Federated search, and an e-portfolio for students with WYSIWYG publishing. This software, called myclasses, won the National Australian Internet Association Innovation award, a major software award. Myclasses was arguably one of the top k-12 e-learning platforms in the world, with over a million users in five countries, including the UK where it is part of the BECTA Learning Platform.

Daniel is currently Program Lead, Projects and Architecture for the National Schools Interoperability Program (NSIP). NSIP is an initiative of the State, Territory and Commonwealth Ministers of Education that commenced in July 2010, incorporating the "Towards SIF AU Program," to provide leadership and support in the delivery of e-learning projects and manage the Systems Interoperability Framework (SIF) specification in Australia. Under Daniel's leadership, NSIP has completed 12 pilot projects across Australia, demonstrating the value of SIF to solve interoperability issues in the Australian education sector.


Isard, Justine

Education Consultant/Director – MyLearning

Justine Isard, Director of MyLearning, based in Melbourne supports schools in professional development in the areas of boys' education and utilising emerging technologies in the classroom. Justine has completed her Masters of Education specialising in Boys' Education.

Over the last six years while teaching and developing a virtual classroom at a secondary and tertiary level Justine has presented at a number of conferences around Australia.

Justine's most recent conference presentations for 2010/2011 include: The Boys and Technology Conference in Melbourne, The National Boys' Education Conference in Sydney, The MyLearning Conference Series in Hobart, Engage, Inspire, Learn 2011 in Melbourne, Adelaide, Brisbane and Sydney and Vision to Reality QSA Conference in Brisbane.

Justine has written articles for a variety of education publications and has been teaching the Masters in Boys' Education Program at Newcastle University since 2009 and in the same year won the AADES Teacher of the Year.


Johnson, Laurence F.

Johnson is an acknowledged expert on emerging technology and its impacts on society and education, and the topics of creativity, innovation, and how to think about the future.

With more than 25 years of experience in the higher education arena, he served in campus roles that included faculty dean, CIO, provost, and president before joining the NMC in 2001.

Johnstone-McCloud, Ben

Principal – Crusoe 7-10 Secondary College, VIC

Ben began his career at Broadmeadows Secondary College as a Physical Education and Mathematics teacher before moving to Fitzroy High School as a member of the school’s leadership team. He is currently the Principal of Crusoe College, a 900 student Year 7-10 school in Bendigo that is one of the five schools involved in the Bendigo Regeneration Project known as the Bendigo Education Plan (BEP). Ben was appointed to this position at the age of 28 and has held this position for over 3 years. Whilst at Crusoe he has led the building of a 22 million dollar school as well as a significant teaching and learning and cultural transformation of the college. Personalised relationships and learning is at the heart of the schools improvement focus and learning technology has played an integral part in this.


Long, Prof. Phil

Director, Centre for Educational Innovation & Technology - The University of Queensland (UQ)

Phil is a Professor Innovation and Educational Technology (School of ITEE & School of Psychology), founding Director of the Centre for Educational Innovation and Technology at the University of Queensland, and a Visiting Researcher at the Center for Educational Computing Initiatives at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He is a lapsed biologist cum learning technologist focused on emerging technologies and learning spaces, physical and virtual.

Prof. Long's professional activities include the New Media Consortium (Board and Horizon Report), AAEEBL Advisory Board, & Director of Learning Outreach for the MIT iCampus Alliance. He has numerous publications, book chapters, and webinars around technology and learning.


Lynch, Helen M.

Senior E-learning Consultant / ACT Toolbox Champion - Canberra Institute of Technology / Australian Flexible Learning Framework

Helen M. Lynch has a background as an educator and flexible learning enthusiast in the vocational education and training (VET) and university sectors.

She is currently ACT Toolbox Champion with the Australian Flexible Learning Framework and a committed advocate of e-learning.
Helen is also an online educational designer with the Centre for Education Excellence at Canberra Institute of Technology.

Her Framework role involves supporting fellow VET educators to develop and implement engaging online teaching resources and strategies and explore new technologies for learning.

Helen holds post graduate qualifications in educational management, online education and Indigenous education and is currently undertaking a doctorate at the University of Southern Queensland researching learning object reuse.

Magraith, Justin

Enterprise Architect - Department of Education, Western Australia (DET WA)

Justin Magraith is the Enterprise Architect for the Department of Education, Western Australia. Justin has been with the Department for 7 years and in that time he has established the Department's Identity Management strategy and overall system integration approach.

Justin has been involved in the Tri-Border Attendance Strategy from its very beginning, helping the project team turn an ambitious idea into the successful implementation of a ground-breaking system.

 

McCredie, Dr. Nerida

NSW Dept of Education and Training

Dr Nerida McCredie has completed several research projects investigating generative learning theory within technological contexts, examining how students design e-learning environments to explore scientific concepts.

She is currently teaching Year 6 at The Kuring-gai Unit for Gifted & Talented Children at St Ives North Public School. Nerida's research findings concerning science education, student learning and technology have led her to establish a teaching and learning environment in her classroom that prompts and enables students themselves to seek the very latest scientific understanding on a wide variety of scientific topics.

In 2011, Nerida was a recipient of an Australian Academy of Science Teacher Award.


Midgley, Steve

Deputy Director of Education Technology - U.S. Department of Education

Steve Midgley is the Deputy Director of Education Technology at the US Department of Education. His principal areas of focus are data transparency, digital interoperability and online learning.

Prior to arriving at Education, he was the Director of Education at the FCC, where he headed the team which developed the Education chapter of the National Broadband Plan. Prior to government service he was the principal of Mixrun, a CTO consultancy for a number of for-profit and education sector organizations. Mixrun's clients included California Department of Education's project called Brokers of Expertise, which uses on-line and real world systems to share and build the expertise of educators. Steve also served as a Program Manager for the Stupski Foundation for six years, designing and implementing grants for technology in K-12 education. This work involved intensive on-the-ground implementation work with District and State agencies around country.

In the 90's, Steve was the founding Vice President of Engineering for LoopNet Inc., a commercial real estate listing firm. He designed and built LoopNet's technology and web systems from its inception. LoopNet remains a successful business and is currently listed on NASDAQ.

 

Mirtschin, Anne

ICT Co-ordinator - Hawkesdale P12 College, VIC

Anne is an innovative teacher who uses online tools to create powerful learning opportunities for students. She is passionate about rural and global education, immersing technology into the classroom, eLearning and loves collaborating and learning online. See her blog.

She currently teaches Information Technolgy and accounting. Anne is a web conference coach one day per week, for 2011, with the Victorian Education Department and Early Childhood Development, co- organising and moderating two weekly webinars, Tech Talk Tuesdays and eT@lking.

Anne has written the advanced blogging challenges for the global Kick Start Your Blog for Edublogs. She has presented on local, national and international levels in person and virtually. Anne has been received awards at state and national level including Microsoft Innovative Teacher 2008 (Victoria), an Australian Excellence in teaching award 2009, Bailleu Myer Scholarship for Rural Leadership VITTA outstanding Secondary teacher 2010. She has written Cool Tools for the Connected Classroom.


Nicholas, Nick

Senior Business Analyst - Australian National Data Service

Nick Nicholas is a senior business analyst with the Australian National Data Service, a project set up to promote better management, exposure and reuse of Australia's research data. Nick also works as a consultant with the National Schools Interoperability Program, working on the SIF protocol, and with Education Services Australia focusing on the machine-readable Australian Curriculum.

Prior to this, Nick worked as a consultant for Link Affiliates, a group working on standards and interoperability in Australian Education. Nick has a background in Greek linguistics, and has worked with the Thesaurus Linguae Graecae digital library and lectured at the University of Melbourne.

His recent work covers persistent identifiers, repository federation, student identity, and research metadata management, including formal modelling and policy formulation as well as requirements and systems analysis.

O'Hagan, David

Assistant Director-General, Information and Technologies

In the early 1980s as a primary school teacher, David introduced the first computers into the classrooms of a small rural state school. In many ways, his professional life with Education Queensland has paralleled the department’s journey with ICT.

Through a period of discovery and early adoption in the 1980s and 1990s, he worked in a variety of teaching and consulting roles working in schools to assist teachers integrate computers into the curriculum while studying and lecturing part-time on educational computing at Griffith University.

The journey so far has allowed him to blend a broad range of ICT knowledge and skills with a deep understanding and abiding passion for the core business of schools: teaching and learning.

In his previous role as the Director Enterprise Platform, he had responsibility for leading and directing the coordinated delivery of key technology initiatives underpinning the department’s Smart Classrooms agenda.

This program of work was designed to provide enhanced ICT support services across all 1300 Queensland government school sites, in order to develop a sustainable, robust, enterprise-wide ICT platform.

David’s current role is the Assistant Director-General Information and Technologies, which incorporates the technology strategy, policy, projects, operations and service delivery units across the Department into a single branch as part of the Operations Division.


O'Neill, Owen

eWorks

Owen has worked in the Vocational Education and Training sector for more than 6 years. He previously managed the Australian Flexible Learning Framework's E-standards for Training Activity, which is a primary driver in the collaborative adoption of technical standards for e-learning content and systems in Vocational Education.

Owen has previously worked on various e-learning standards and interoperability initiatives in Australia and Europe and is currently based at the University of Melbourne coordinating e-research projects.


O’Sullivan, Paul

Practice Manager – Eclipse Computing

Paul O’Sullivan is the Product Manager for EduPoint ES - Student Information Solution at Eclipse Computing. Paul has over 10 years experience in the design, and the development of enterprise level systems for higher education and K-12, and has had a long-term involvement with the EduPoint ES solution deployment for foundations clients; Department of Education, Tasmania and Brisbane Catholic Education. Paul has been at the forefront of enterprise level solution development for educational jurisdictions.

Recently Paul has been a vendor representative member of the SIF AU Data Standards Working Group and has chaired the vendor based SIF AU SIS Baseline Project Group.

Paul is passionate about bringing the benefits of enterprise level solutions to school environments. He is also committed to other product responsibilities within Eclipse including SharePoint and mobile solutions.


Pierson, Ramona

Chief Science Officer - Promethean

Ramona brings extensive experience with the K-12 education world as an academician, educator, district administrator, technology leader and change agent in large urban school districts.

Her career began as a neuroscientist in university hospitals, which led to her advocating for students with learning challenges in the public school systems. She developed algorithms for tumor segmentation and neural surgical automation tools for diagnostics and surgical simulation. Her innovative work with education spurred her to develop enterprise level software solutions for data, assessment, and communication systems specifically for education. In 2005, she developed The Source http://www.seattleschools.org/area/source/index.dxml , an online resource for the Seattle Public Schools that allows parents and students to view classroom assignments, grades, attendance, school news and other items. In 2007, she founded SynapticMash to take her concepts to the next level, creating a range of online tools for educators, parents and students.

Currently, Ramona is the Chief Science Officer for Promethean and is develop next generation education products for the company. She is also continuing to develop concepts and process for intelligent learning designs and learning automation engines.

Ramona also founded Learning without Borders (L3RN Foundation), which provides technology and training to educators and learners since 2004.

Ramona is currently working on a very innovative project in the teacher effectiveness space by combining augmented reality integrated with real time data and web 2.0 technologies…some think this is what web 3.0 is moving towards.

 

Randall, Robert

General Manager, Curriculum - Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA)

Robert Randall is currently the General Manager, Curriculum, with the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA).

He was previously the General Manager of the Interim National Curriculum Board (NCB).

Prior to working at both ACARA and NCB, Robert was the Director of Curriculum K-12 with the NSW Department of Education and Training. In this position, Robert was responsible for leading and coordinating the development of curriculum policy and the provision of teacher professional learning and curriculum support materials for NSW public schools for K-12.

From 1996 to 2001, Robert was the Director, Curriculum, with the NSW Board of Studies, where was responsible for the management of the Higher School Certificate syllabus review program and a range of K-10 syllabus development projects.

Robert began his career as a teacher of mathematics in Perth before holding a range of positions within and beyond schools in Western Australia. These included Project Leader (Monitoring Standards in Education), Manager (Assessment and Reporting at Department of Education WA), and Principal Consultant with the Interim Curriculum Council of Western Australia.


Sansom, Lee

Principal - Blair Athol North Birth – Year 7, SA

 

Lee has had various roles in education in South Australia over the last 30 years. She has been a leader in Learning Technologies for many years and in January 2011 Lee opened a new technology rich, 21st century Birth – Year 7 School focusing on innovation in teaching & learning, especially learning spaces that foster discovery, inquiry, creativity and curiosity for all learners at any time, within and beyond the school environment.

The school is influenced by the principles of Reggio Emilia Schools in Italy.


Seiler, Paul

Ministry of Education, New Zealand

Paul initiated and led the New Zealand Ministry of Education's work in the student management systems domain, starting with an accreditation process and moving on to uptake/implementations and interoperability. This scope widened over time to cover managed learning environments ("the software and digital contant that supports learning") portfolio, including learning management systems, eportfolios, identity and access management, and reusable and portable content. Throughout all the objective is "to design and promote an educationally relevant, open, modular, standards-based and sustainable approach to the development and use of managed learning environments for New Zealand schools".

For fourteen years Paul has served the needs of education from within the Ministry of Education, while working with passion and innovation, as the job for him is definitely a vocation rather than an occupation.

Combining a theoretical approach with a commitment to delivering, Paul is always open to meeting new people and hearing their story. A recent restructuring has offered Paul the opportunity to construct his own portfolio of work.

Seyfang, Mike

Enhanced Learning First-year Sciences Project - University of Adelaide

Mike Seyfang is a Social Media Consultant with a passion for Research, Teaching and Learning.

Mike's consulting work is built on a solid foundation of over 25 years ICT experience, the last eight in senior roles with Microsoft. Notable achievements include the envisioning and conception of the widely acclaimed Microsoft and South Australian Government Innovation Centre and significant contributions to the South Australian Government Electronic Messaging Service (SAGEMS).

More recently, a series of engagements with Education.au resulted in significant cultural shift influenced through social media and tangible outcomes from Proof of Concept projects. Mike has a flair and passion for harnessing creativity and innovation for substantial community outcomes.

His most recent high impact consulting assignments have delivered significant business value through effective use of emerging technology and innovative change management practices.


Steigler-Peters, Susi

National General Manager, Education - Telstra

Susi has responsibility for the Education vertical within Telstra. Her national role reaches 10,000 schools, some 2,000 TAFE sites, 38 universities and key education agencies including ACARA, AITSL, ASPA, DEEWR and Education Services Australia. Susi's key areas of focus are the provision of thought leadership, solution innovation, industry insight & strategic engagement with education C-levels. She is keenly focused on collaborating with education leaders to help them arrive at their preferred future. Susi is a champion of the link between education and the nation's economy.

Susi has established an Education Roundtable Advisory Group which comprises highly respected education leaders from across Australia. The group represents the K12 sector, TAFEs, universities, education agencies and peak associations. The Group meets regularly to confront the challenges associated with the changing Australian education landscape. Particular attention has been given to the business issues of student engagement, teacher professional learning, the role of assessment and the use of technology to transform the learning environment. The views of many of the Education Roundtable Advisory Group have been formalized in the draft white paper entitled Personalised Learning – Meeting the Australian Challenge.

Before joining Telstra, Susi fulfilled a number of roles as Chief Education Officer with the NSW Department of Education and Training, including Business Development. In these roles, she led a number of strategies including the innovative Partnerships for Learning strategy. Her work in this new role forged partnerships with leading corporations including Cisco, Intel, Microsoft and many other technology vendors. Susi has published a number of conference papers about developing sustainable learning practices. Susi serves as a Board member of the Greater Western Sydney Education Alliance, the ‘We Link' Advisory Group hosted by Education Services Australia and, by invitation of the education minister, served as a board member on the New South Wales Community Languages Schools Board.


Stevens, Majella

Project Manager - Department of Education Western Australia (DET WA)

Majella Stevens commenced with the Tri Border Strategy in August this year, prior to this she managed the Department of Education Western Australia systemic literacy and numeracy improvement strategies, including the Getting it Right Literacy and Numeracy strategy and the Aboriginal Literacy Strategy which operated in approximately 50 remote schools.

 

Tate, Nick Dr.

Director, Research Data Storage Infrastructure (RDSI) Project - University of Queensland (UQ)

Dr Nick Tate is Director of the Australian Government's Research Data Storage Infrastructure (RDSI) project which is based at the University of Queensland (UQ). RDSI is a $50m project which aims to transform the storage of research data throughout Australia. He also chairs the Steering Committee for the National Research Network Project (NRN) which is supporting advanced networks for research. Prior to this, he was Associate Director of the Australian Research Collaboration Service (ARCS) which developed and deployed cloud computing and cloud storage services for Australian researchers.

He was previously both IT Director at UQ and the Director of the Australian National Computer Emergency Response Team (AusCERT). He is also a Director of Higher Ed Systems Pty Ltd, National Treasurer of the Australian Computer Society (ACS), Chair of the eResearch Australasia conference and chaired the World Computer Congress in 2010. He currently chairs the ICT Industry Workgroup representing the ICT industry in Queensland.

Prior to UQ, Nick worked on the development of anti-missile missile systems for Royal Navy Warships, before spending twenty years working for investment banks, eighteen years in London and then two years with Macquarie Bank in Sydney, where he was responsible for the bank’s global IT infrastructure. He was Head of IT for the United Bank of Kuwait in London during the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait in the first Gulf war when there was a run on the bank and many strange requests from Baghdad!

Nick holds a Bachelor's degree in Physics from the University of St. Andrews in Scotland, a Master's degree in Computer Science and a PhD in IT security. He is also a Chartered Engineer, a Chartered IT Professional, a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society and a Fellow of the ACS. He has over 16 years’ experience at CIO level.


Thompson, Darrall

Director of Teaching & Learning - University of Technology, Sydney (UTS)

Darrall Thompson is Director of Teaching and Learning and Senior Lecturer in the School of Design at the University of Technology, Sydney (UTS).

He has received awards for the implementation of equity, diversity and social justice and the innovative use of technology in teaching.

Thompson has advised Government on curriculum development and conducted contract research on Creative Industries for the Department of Education and Training.

His own research includes creative concept development for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC), innovative house design using a modular system based on natural geometry and the design of assessment software currently used in schools and universities.

He holds a research Masters in Design from UTS and is currently completing a PhD on Design Thinking in Education with the Australian Centre for Educational Study at Macquarie University.

Whitby, Greg

Executive Director of Schools - Catholic Diocese of Parramatta, NSW

Greg Whitby leads a system of 80 Catholic schools across Western Sydney with 4500 staff and 45000 students. He has 30 years experience in K-12 schooling and senior system leadership.
He is committed to building the capacity of all school leaders and teachers within the system in order to improve the learning outcomes for all students.

In 2007 he was named the most innovative educator in Australia by the Bulletin Magazine in its annual Smart 100 Awards and awarded the Australian Council for Educational Leaders (ACEL) Presidential Citation and in 2011, the AW Jones Oration Medal. Melanie Worrall works in the Australian Flexible Learning Framework's Benchmarking and Research business activity. Melanie has experience in resource development, instructional design and lecturing. She was the project manager on the development of the E-assessment Guidelines for the VET sector.

Branch Manager, Digital Education Branch, National Schools and Youth Partnerships Group - Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR)

Rhyan Bloor is the Branch Manager of the Digital Education Branch, in the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR). The Branch is responsible for implementing the Australian Government’s investment of over $2.4 billion in the Digital Education Revolution and the $50.1 million Online Diagnostic Tool election commitment.

Rhyan's experience in the Australian Public Service is wide-ranging including the Departments of the Prime Minister and Cabinet, Broadband and Infrastructure. She has developed telecommunications and broadcasting legislative and regulatory frameworks, been responsible for negotiations with the United States on the Australian content and media provisions of the Australia-US Free Trade Agreement and led a range of policy and program initiatives in the communications, infrastructure and education sectors.

Rhyan has a BA (Hons) in politics and philosophy at Monash University.

Leeson, Jerry

Director, Business Solutions - Education Services Australia (ESA)

Jerry is the Director, Business Solutions for Education Services Australia. He has a long history in Information Technology across a number of industries and for the last eight years has been working in the education sector.

Jerry works closely with technical specifications for organisations specialising in standards that support ICT in education. He has a particular interest in the innovative application of technologies in educational settings and is pleased to be a part of the judging panel for the Learning Impact Awards (LIA).

Jerry has previous experience in the awards as both an entrant and a judge. As an entrant, one of his projects did very well locally and went on to receive an award at the Global Learning Impact Awards.

 

Treadwell, Ross

Director Capital Programs & Asset Services - Department of Education and Children's Service (DEEWR) - Schools Sector

Ross Treadwell is the Director for Capital Programs and Asset Services in the Department of Education and Children's Services (DECS), South Australia, responsible for all major and minor facility upgrades, improvements and asset management services.

Prior to his current appointment, Ross was the Assistant Director, Learning Technologies, the Principal at Seaford 6-12 School (the first purpose built middle school in SA), the Technology Curriculum Officer and was also a foundation manager responsible for establishing the SA Technology School of the Future in DECS.

An educator at heart, Ross has also taught at a number of schools and tertiary groups in South Australia and the Northern Territory and is passionate about the use of technology to improve teaching and learning for all groups and in designing and developing new learning environments to meet diverse learning needs.
